The balance between inspired spontaneousness and practiced technique is, as is well known, at the heart of all artistic expression, whether from the East or West. Her knack for the spontaneous flourish is most clearly apparent in her use of colour in Chinese painting.
Another line of development discernable in Mak's work over the years since 1986 is her use of humour. Her brand of humour which tends to be mixed with an eye for detail and a hint of tenderness relies on childhood activities, cleverly juxtaposed with white, unworked spaces and other pictorial elements.
